What J1772 is

J1772 is the common North American AC charging connector. Vehicles with CCS1 inlets generally use the upper J1772 portion for AC charging.

The SAE J1772 standard defines the conductive charge coupler and vehicle-inlet requirements. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center lists J1772 for Level 1 and Level 2 equipment. Those standards references explain what the connector is; they do not establish a particular vehicle’s maximum power.

Charging speed

The maximum rate depends on the EV’s onboard AC charger and the EVSE. A higher-rated station cannot make the vehicle accept more power than it supports.

J1772 and CCS1

CCS1 adds two larger DC contacts below the J1772 portion. That lets one vehicle inlet support AC charging through J1772 and DC fast charging through the combined CCS1 connector. The AC and DC paths still require different charger and adapter rules.
