AC vs DC charging
Why the current type matters as much as the connector shape.
AC Level 2
With AC charging, the vehicle’s onboard charger converts incoming AC power. J1772 and NACS Level 2 are AC systems, and their limits are set by the vehicle, the circuit, and the EVSE.
A CCS1/J1772-port vehicle may require a compatible NACS-to-J1772 AC adapter when using NACS Level 2 equipment. A native NACS vehicle does not automatically need that adapter.
DC fast charging
With DC fast charging, power is delivered to the battery through the vehicle’s DC inlet. CCS1 and NACS DC adapters are not interchangeable with AC adapters.
DC access can also depend on the charging network, site configuration, vehicle software, and manufacturer approval. A physically fitting adapter is not enough evidence.
The rule of thumb
Always match the adapter to the current type. A DC fast-charging adapter should never be used to make an AC Level 2 connection.
Before plugging in, check four things: the current type, the vehicle inlet, the adapter’s approved use, and the site or network access policy. Run an exact compatibility check when you are unsure.
